GEORGIA KRAPF
PG&E Substation
Mission St, San Francisco, CA
Upgrades to the Mission Street Substation in SOMA at the corner of 8th Street provides security while adding texture and focus to public life. Designed by William Merchant and built in 1948, the monumental structure features two WPA-style bas reliefs with new focused lighting. The design solution replaces barbed wire fencing with a series of locally-crafted, ribbon-like steel plate barriers that are uplit by linear LED lighting and back light by large spot facade uplight.
